August Permaculture Site Tours

Tuesday, August 6th from 6-7pm; 5005 Risser Rd., Madison, WI 53705

Stephanie Sykes and Malte John will lead a tour through their recently completed permaculture redesign of Steph’s parents’ backyard. They have built a cob oven, planted a number of natives and edibles, and addressed drainage issues using swales and rain gardens. The project is an example of “meeting clients where they’re at” and designing systems that introduce suburban homeowners to permaculture concepts. For more info check out their website:

Theresa & Bear Berrie
In 2005, Bear and Theresa moved onto a tiny 60’x140’ lot on Main Street that is mostly under the shade of two black walnuts. In 2018 they finally removed the last of their lawn and replaced it with edible perennials and certified wildlife habitat. In their “yarden” they built a frog pond (w/o a pump), two catios, a stock tank annual garden, mushroom log area, a small stone circle, and places where you can’t see the neighbors. Going forward, they are hoping to spend more time harvesting than building & planting. They could also talk about what they’ve learned about ground covers and creating paths, making walnut syrup, alternative cooking methods (solar oven, haybox, woodstove), how they cool their house without A/C, and being debt free. They blog and self-publish books about their adventures, see People are welcome to stay for an optional meal after the tour, bring a dish to pass or something for the grill, and a lawn chair. We’d love to hear more about what you’re doing in your yards.

These tours are free and open to the public.
